How to choose an ottoman bed

An ottoman turns the dead space under your bed into the most useful storage in the room. Here's how to pick the right one.

01

Measure the swing

Side lift needs clearance along the long edge; end lift needs clearance at the foot. Leave at least 80cm for the mattress to rotate up.

02

Pick a lift direction

Side lift suits beds with a head wall only. End lift is best when walls flank both long sides.

03

Match a mattress

Choose a mattress that's flexible enough to lift cleanly — pocket sprung and memory foam both work well with ottoman bases.

FAQs

Ottoman bed questions, answered

What is an ottoman bed?+

An ottoman bed uses gas-lift hydraulics to raise the mattress and reveal a deep storage compartment underneath the entire bed — ideal for bedding, luggage and seasonal items.

What's the difference between side lift and end lift?+

Side lift opens along the long edge of the bed, which suits rooms where the bed sits against a wall at the head. End lift opens from the foot of the bed, useful when there's a wall on one side.

How much can an ottoman bed hold?+

The full storage cavity sits beneath the mattress platform. A double ottoman typically gives you 30–40cm of clearance across the whole base — enough for several bedding sets, suitcases and seasonal clothing.

Is the gas lift easy to operate?+

Yes. The gas pistons take the weight of the mattress, so opening and closing only takes a light push or pull.

Do ottoman beds come with a mattress?+

Bases are sold separately so you can pair them with the mattress that suits you best. Browse our handmade mattress range to complete your set.
